Founded in 1824 as the Manchester Mechanics' Institute, the University of Manchester has a rich heritage rooted in the Industrial Revolution. It aimed to provide the working class with education in science and technology.

The University of Manchester holds a special place in history. Our origins as England’s first civic university are closely linked to Manchester’s development as the world’s first industrial city. In 1948, the world’s first stored-program computer, known as "The Baby," successfully executed its first programme at the University.

Splitting the
Atom

Breakthrough research by Ernest Rutherford at the University led to the splitting of the atom in 1917, marking the dawn of nuclear physics.

Alan Turing, the pioneer of artificial intelligence and modern computing, conducted groundbreaking research at the University from 1948 to 1954.

Nobel-Winning  Discovery

Professors Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov isolated graphene at the University in 2004, earning a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010.

Advancing Radio Astronomy
